Greater Horizons donors can use their donor-advised funds to support charities around the world. Many donors work with our team to identify U.S.-based charities that can receive funds on behalf of international charities.
If that option is not available, donors can grant directly to international charities as long as their grants comply with all laws pertaining to grants made outside of the U.S., including IRS rules and the Patriot Act.
Greater Horizons has partnered with global giving expert Paragon Philanthropy to ensure proper due diligence and record keeping for our donors’ international grants. Greater Horizons will work directly with Paragon Philanthropy to handle all of the administrative responsibilities. This includes screening international charities to ensure they:
Because of the extensive due diligence process, international grants require additional fees and may take a minimum of six to eight weeks to complete. We find the process goes more smoothly when the charity has staff available to support the due diligence process and provide ongoing reporting, and when the donor is already in touch with the charity. Reaching out ahead of time to let the charity know they’ll hear from our team can help avoid delays.
